Safety Pays
From a Webinar Attendee:
I worked for a electric utility several years ago. We had a mechanic who would not wear his safety glasses in the plant. After several warnings he still would not comply. One day I was walking through the shop and noticed that he was beginning to weld so I took his welding helmet and told him that he did not need it to weld.
He said that if he welded without it he would get severe flash burns in his eyes. I asked him if he had ever tried to weld without his helmet. He said no, he had been told of the dangers of welding. I informed him that the same thing goes for safety glasses in the plant. One thing going wrong and he could lose his eyesight. Still not convinced I asked him if he had any pictures of his children. He proceeded to show me the pictures of his child and that’s when I told him that he better study the picture hard and remember what his child looked like because he was going to have to feel him grow up because not wearing safety glasses could cost him his sight and he would not be able to see his child grow up. This got his attention.
Another incident which happened to me was I was walking to my car one afternoon when a small pressure gage on a column exploded. I felt little pieces of metal hit my arms and neck but no damage was done. Then I noticed a small spot on my right lens of my safety glasses. Closer examination showed a small piece of metal about the size of a pencil lead impaled in my right lens. Had I not had my safety glasses on I would have lost the sight in my right eye and possibly my life with a brain injury. It pays to wear your safety glasses.
